Théâtre de l'Œil will be presenting its signature show, The Star Keeper/Le Porteur, during its tour of the People's Republic of China from July 13-31.
The troupe will be appearing in the national capital at a brand new venue, the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, from July 13-17. The show will then move on to the Shanghai Children’s Arts Theatre on July 23-24, followed by the prestigious Guangzhou Opera House on July 29-31. A total of 14 performances will be oered in the three cities. The troupe's last appearance in China was in 2014, when it staged 3-Legged Tale/Sur 3 Pattes for young audiences and families in Guangzhou as part of an Asian tour.
The Star Keeper garnered the Quebec-based company worldwide acclaim. An example of universal theatre without words or borders, it is immersed in the magical universe of children's dreams. The puppets, music, scenography and special effects create a delicate and poetic language that tells the story of the initiatory quest of Pretzel and his shining star. The production won the prestigious Chalmers Canadian Play Award (Theatre for Young Audiences division) in 2001, in addition to a Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry from UNIMA-USA in 2005 and awards in three categories from the Académie québécoise du théâtre in 1999 (Young Audience Production, Set Design and Special Contribution to Puppet Design).
Created in 1997 by Richard Lacroix, André Laliberté and Richard Morin, the show, which has delighted generations of young people on multiple continents, will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017. The New Victory Theatre in New York City staged The Star Keeper for the second time in April 2016 to mark its own 20th anniversary, bringing together a select group of performing arts companies as part of a program specially designed for the event.
